Presidential election: first round results

French voters selected the two candidates for the run off on 6 May during the first round of the French presidential election on Sunday 22 April 2007. Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal, who received 31.11% and 25.83% of the vote respectively, will face each other in the second round of the election.

Results of the 10 other candidates:
-  Olivier Besancenot: 4.11%
-  Marie-George Buffet: 1.94%
-  Gérard Schivardi: 0.34%
-  François Bayrou: 18.55%
-  José Bové: 1.32%
-  Dominique Voynet: 1.57%
-  Philippe de Villiers: 2.24%
-  Frédéric Nihous: 1.15%
-  Jean-Marie Le Pen: 10.51%
-  Arlette Laguiller: 1.34%

The rate of abstention has decreased this year, compared with the 2002 presidential election, and is currently at 15.40%. Official results are also available on the minister of the interior’s website.

The second round electoral campaign will begin on the day that the names of the two candidates are published in the official journal and will end at midnight on 5 May.
